Soils for Salmon

Soil Best Practices

New Construction:

Retain and protect native topsoil & vegetation where practical

Restore disturbed soils by tilling 2-3" of compost into upper 8" of soil

Loosen compacted subsoil, if needed, by ripping to 12" depth

Mulch landscape beds after planting

Existing Landscapes:

Till in compost when relandscaping

Mulch beds with organic mulches

Topdress turf with compost

The Soils for Salmon project, begun by WORC in 1999, has spread awareness that the health of salmon and all our water resources depends on how we treat the soil, especially in developing urban and suburban areas.

The project promotes "BMP's" (best management practices) for protecting native soil and restoring disturbed soils with compost. read article about the project
